General Project Management System - Overview Page

GPMS - a system to manage projects via web interface

In many areas of research (e.g. genomic and post-genomic) modern software applications have to deal with huge amounts of information that are frequently collected from high-throughput experiments. This data has to be stored in well structured repositories (e.g. relational database management systems) that provide efficient automated access for all further downstream analysis of the obtained results. Furhtermore, this new knowledge generated by higher level data evaluation has to be stored consistently and needs to be cross-linked to the original information.

Since all research projects often produce highly confidential results it is also important that essential parts of the data can be protected from unauthorized access. Obviously, increasing numbers of projects require extensive administration of project related data sources, users, and their individual privileges for accessing the information.

Having this in mind, we have developed a flexible and extensible General Project Management System as a central component for managing projects and theis users, providing a systematic approach that helps the administrators to keep an overview across all projects.

The main idea of the GPMS is to administrate the projects and all the related data by the system admininstrators (at Bielefeld University, Center for Biotechnology) and the project members by the project administrators (at the respective sites around the world). Therefore, after registering a new project to the GPMS, a system administrator will add the requested user as administrator of that specific project. Thus, systems administrators do not have to take care of the project members but certainly they may.

This documentation will guide the reader through the whole General Project Management System web interface, providing an overview of 'how to' manage the users in a project.
